I used to add the extra stuff and clients would come in and maybe it would go well. They might get blasted and love being pushed. I’d get texts about being sore and that they were excited to do the next one. Or worse, it would be too much for them and I could tell they felt disheartened and I’d have work to do to build them back up due to my over exuberance.
But then we’d meet again, and they could only remember half the stuff I’d coached them through. They would say they were too sore to practice much or any of the stuff I’d given them for homework. And the stuff they did remember wasn’t done all that well either.
I know what to do, I just can’t stick with it. Sound familiar? Why is it often so hard to make real progress? That’s where Steve Leadbetter aka Coach Stevo comes in. Stevo runs a company in San Francisco called Habitry who focus on teaching people habits and principles to improve their fitness and nutrition and enrich their lives. He has a BA in Philosophy from the University of Chicago, and an MA in Sport Psychology from John F. Kennedy University and he’s a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Before the Habitry Platform was a thing, we helped Chris start a coaching group on Facebook. A few months into the group we realized he had been running it for free. Coach Stevo’s first free group (which had to be free, for his Master’s thesis) ended after 21 days from lack of engagement from clients. Clients in Omar’s first paid group stopped responding after 7 days. Clients in Chris’ free group were engaged for 204 days. Yet, despite his success, Chris still had doubts about his skills as a coach. He recently started his first paid Habitry group, while taking the Essentials of Group Coaching course.
